Rat and mouse control in Canoga Park
Scratching in the ceiling at night, droppings in the garage, or chewed fruit on the tree? Here's what's likely going on and how to get it handled.
The roof rat problem in the Valley
The rodent most West Valley homeowners deal with is the roof rat (Rattus rattus). It is a slim, agile climber that travels along fences, power lines and tree branches, and it nests up high, which is why the first sign is usually noise in the attic rather than in the kitchen. Citrus, avocado and other backyard fruit trees, ivy-covered walls, and stacked firewood give roof rats both food and cover. Norway rats (heavier, burrowing) and house mice also turn up, especially in garages and crawlspaces.
Signs to look for
- Scratching or running sounds in the ceiling or walls, mostly at night
- Droppings (roughly ½ inch, pointed at the ends for roof rats) in the attic, garage or behind appliances
- Hollowed-out oranges or avocados still hanging on the tree
- Grease marks along beams, pipes or the top of walls
- Chewed wiring, irrigation lines or stored boxes
What a good rodent job includes
A trap-only visit often fails because new rats move into the same space. Effective rodent work usually has three parts:
- Inspection: finding entry points at roof vents, gaps where pipes and cables enter, garage door seals and the roof-to-wall junction.
- Removal: trapping in the attic and other active areas, with follow-up visits to check and remove traps.
- Exclusion: sealing openings with hardware cloth, metal flashing or sealant so new rodents can't get in. Some providers also offer attic sanitation if droppings and insulation damage are extensive.
What you can do today
- Pick up fallen fruit daily and trim tree branches at least a few feet back from the roof.
- Store pet food and birdseed in sealed containers.
- Keep firewood and storage off the ground and away from walls.
Avoid scattering loose rodenticide pellets yourself. California restricts many anticoagulant rodenticides because of harm to wildlife and pets, and poisoned rats often die inside walls.
Frequently asked questions
How long does rodent removal take?
Trapping is usually set on the first visit, with follow-up checks over one to three weeks. Exclusion work can often be done in a single visit once entry points are identified.
Will sealing the house trap rats inside?
That's why sequencing matters. Providers typically trap first, confirm activity has stopped, then complete the final sealing.
